The birth of differential calculus in a beautiful run of the Acta Eruditorum
Leibniz, G. [W.]
Leipzig, Christopher
Gunther for J. Grossium, and Christoph Breitkopf for J. Gleiditsch, 1682-1693. Small 4to. With numerous
engraved plates and tables, some folding. Apart from his famous " Nova Methodus pro maximis et
minimis", Leibniz published 37 articles in these volumes of the "Acta Eruditorum". 12 volumes bound in
seven, contemporary vellum with titles written in contemporary hand on spine. 33,500 american dollars
= The 1684 volume with Leibniz's famous article on differential and also on integral calculus in a very rare state. It is now known
that two distinct issues exist. In the Norman copy, page 467 is in an uncorrected setting, with many printing errors in the
mathematical formula. In the copy described in Dibner's "Heralds of Science" (previously recognized as a first issue), the page is
entirely reset, with corrections, but is obviously now recorded as the second 'state' or 'issue'. Our copy is similar to the Norman
copy, with page 467 in uncorrected state. However, in our copy the plate next to page 467 differs from both Norman and Dibner:
the letters "M. Oct" are printed at the top of the sheet underneath the plate number. Also, there is an extra dedication in the
beginning of the volume, which is not present in the other issues. What we seem to have here is thus yet another issue of the work
and it is still unclear which one is the true first. It is, however, not unthinkable that what we have is the true first issue, since there
would be little reason to add "M. Oct" to the plate if it was issued at a later date. Dibner, 109: "First printing of this epochal work.
(...) Fifteen years after Newton's first work in fluxions and nine after his own independent discovery, Leibnitz published the above,
his first announcement of the differential calculus". Apart from this most famous article by Leibniz, there are over two dozen other
articles by him, plus articles by other famous scientists like Bernoulli and Huygens. The articles and plates in this set illustrate the
progress of science in many fields of knowledge - human anatomy, natural history, mining and archaeology, to name just a few.
One plate in the 1689 volume is lacking, but this plate does not relate to any Leibniz articles. Old library stamp on verso of title
pages, removed paste on inner cover. Some light uniform age toning as usual for this sort of paper and a few pages browned. In the
1686/1687 volume 5 ll. have a red wine stain covering various parts of text, but not effecting readability. Overall this is a very
good set in an unusual crisp and clean condition and in an attractive original binding. Norman 1326; Dibner, Heralds of science
109; Ravier, Biblio. de Leibnitz 84-96, 101-104 and 195-214; Printing and the Mind of Man, 160.
Important contribution to the famous Leibniz - Newton controversy
[44] [Leibniz, G.W.]
G. G. Leibnitii Responsio ad Dn. Nic. Fatii Duillerii imputationes. Accessit nova Artis Analyticae
Combinatoria Arte lucem capit. (Pages 198-208, in: Acta Eruditorum). Lipsiae, J. Grossius, 1700. This is
the complete volume for the year 1700, containing a total of 586 pp and 10 plates (two of the plates, not
relating to the Leibniz article, are added loose in photostat.). Contemporary vellum binding with leather
title label and gilt lettering. 2400 american dollars
= Leibniz' reaction to Nicolas Fatio de Duillier, at the hight of the controversy between Leibniz and Newton over the invention of
the calculus. Up to 1693 the method of fluxions which had been invented by Newton, and had been of great assistance to him in
his mathematical investigations, was still, except to Newton and his friends, a secret. Newton admirers in the Netherlands
informed him that the method of fluxions had been introduced there under the name of Gottfried Leibniz' "Calculus Differentialis".
In 1699, Nicolas Fatio de Duillier published a tract in which he stated that Newton was by several years the first inventor of the
calculus, and insinuated that Leibniz had stolen the idea. It was the start of a serious controversy between Leibniz and Newton,
carried on by their followers for years after both famous mathimaticans had died. In this article in the Acta Eruditorum, Leibniz
replied to Fatio de Duilleir by citing Netwon's letters and the testimony which Newton had rendered to him in the "Principia" as
proofs of his independent authorship of the method. A very good copy in contemporary vellum, ancient library stamp and
superimposed cancellation stamp on verso of title, small paper label with call number on bottom of spine and removed paste on
inside cover. Vellum on covers discoloured, first few pages age-toned, two plates on unrelated subject in photostat, otherwise a
nice, clean copy.
